Andrei Konchalovsky

Andrei Konchalovsky (Russian: Андрей Сергеевич Михалков - Кончаловский, scientific transliteration Andrei Mikhalkov - Sergeevič Končalovskij, often Andrei Konchalovsky; born August 20, 1937 in Moscow ) is a Russian theater and film director.

Life

He is the son of the poet Sergei Mikhalkov, who wrote, among other things, the text of the Russian and Soviet national anthem, and the older brother of film director Nikita Mikhalkov, the painter Pyotr Petrovich Konchalovsky is his grandfather. First, he wanted to be a musician and brought it into a veritable pianist. But then he attended the WGIK, the leading national film school of the Soviet Union, where he studied under Mikhail Romm. At the WGIK he met Andrei Tarkovsky, with whom he made several movies.

In his feature film debut Perwy Uchitel ( The first teacher, 1965) Mikhalkov - Konchalowski filmed a novel by Chingiz Aitmatov about the post-revolutionary South Russia. The resulting black and white film in 1966 Istoriya Asi Klyachinoy, kotoraya lyubila, da ne vyshla zamuzh ( Asja's luckily) was not published until a decade later because he did not meet the strict Soviet censorship requirements. Dvoryanskoe gnezdo ( A needle nest, 1969) - a study of the aristocracy of the 19th century - has been known for the beauty of its imagery, but also criticized as too mannered. The adaptation of Chekhov's play Uncle Vanya (1970 ) is regarded by many as one of the best movies in Russian. But only with novel o vlyublyonnykh ( Romance for Lovers, 1974) and Sibiriade (1979 ) rose Mikhalkov - Konchalowski to the ranks of world-famous filmmaker. From then on he turned art-house films in English, including Maria 's Lovers (1984 ), Runaway Train (1985 ), Duet for One (1986) and Homer and Eddie (1989). To the great disappointment of his fans and the International Film Critics moved Mikhalkov - Konchalowski 1989 into mainstream trade, and turned the action film Tango & Cash starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.

In the early 1990s he returned to Russia and directed several theater productions directed, including the much-acclaimed productions of Chekhov's The Seagull and Strindberg's Miss Julie. Previously, he had performed in several European cities for plays and opera director.

Today Mikhalkov - Konchalowski moved back to Moscow, and occasionally makes for mainstream TV productions short excursions to Hollywood ( The Adventures of Ulysses (1997), The Lion in Winter ( 2003) ).

In 2002 received his Russian- French co - production The Madhouse - a thematization of the Chechen war - an award at the Venice Film Festival.
