Andro Knel

Andro Charles Willem Knel ( born October 8, 1967 in Rotterdam, † June 7, 1989 at Zanderij ) was a Dutch football player; his father was a Surinamese, his mother Dutch.

Knel initially grew up in Rotterdam and since 1977 in The Hague, where he went through the youth teams of HMSH, DWO, ADO and FC Den Haag. The attacking midfielder made ​​his breakthrough at age 19, after he returned in 1986 to Rotterdam: Sparta Rotterdam, he joined 44 times in the Eredivisie, scoring one goal. During the winter break 1988/89 he moved to NAC Breda, for which he also marked a goal in 19 league games. On 7 June 1989, he flew with the Kleurrijk Oranje, a Dutch- Surinamese player selection, at a scheduled friendly tournament in Paramaribo. The SLM Flight 764 crashed on landing, Knel and 14 other members of the team were among the 176 fatalities.

Knel was popular with the fans; he liked to listen to reggae music and with his dreadlocks resembled his compatriot Ruud Gullit. The death Knels brought Sparta and NAC followers closer together. Since 2005, teams of both fan groups play in front of the official meetings of the two teams in the league to the Andro Knel Bokaal.
