Andrzej Stelmachowski

Andrzej Stelmachowski [ and.ʐɛj stɛlmaxɔfsk ʲ i] ( born January 28, 1925 in Poznan, † April 6, 2009 in Warsaw) was a Polish jurist and politician.

Life

Stelmachowski occurred before the war Polish Youth and was a member of the Polish Home Army during World War II. In 1947 he began the study of law at the University of Poznan, where he graduated with a doctorate. He was a professor at the University of Breslau in 1962 and taught since 1969 as a professor at the University of Warsaw. He specialized in civil and agricultural law. He advised since 1980 Solidarity and participated in the Round Table, which met on the transition from a socialist state to a democratic republic. He chaired the Senate as Senate Marshal before (1989-1991), served as Minister of the Ministry of Education (1991-1992) and advised the president ( 2007-2009).

Stelmachowski was the founder of the Association "Polish Community " ( Stowarzyszenie " Wspólnota Polska " ), based in Warsaw. When his long-time President (1990 to 11 May 2008) he fought for the Polish community abroad and provided, inter alia, for a revitalization of the World Games of Poles abroad.

Stelmachowski died on 6 April 2009 at the age of 84 years. Polish President Lech Kaczynski expressed the family and friends from his condolences, as well as politicians across the political spectrum in Poland and representatives of the Polish emigrant organizations in Belarus, Lithuania and the United States.
