Angel tube station

Angel is an underground station of the London Underground in the London Borough of Islington. It is located in the Travelcard Zone 1, below an important junction on the eastern end of the Pentonville Road. Here trains to the Northern Line. In 2011, 17.78 million passengers used the station.

History

The opening of the station took place on 17 November 1901, the City and South London Railway (now the City branch of the Northern Line ). Until May 12, 1907, here was the northern terminus when the line to the main railway stations of King's Cross and Euston was extended.

Like most other stations on this route had been built with a central platform fishing; a design which survives today only in the stations Clapham North and Clapham Common. Access was by lifts. To increase the capacity of the tunnel profile had to be extended. For this reason, the station was closed August 8, 1922 to April 20, 1924.

More and more, it was found that the central platform no longer met the requirements. He posed a security risk and proved to be a bottleneck. For this reason, the station was built at the beginning of the 1990s almost completely new. It created a new platform for the northward moving trains. The platform for trains southbound was closed from 9 August to 19 October 1992. During this time, the second track has been removed there. This is also the reason why this platform as compared with other is unusually broad.

The elevators and the station building on the corner of Torrens Street / City Road were closed, instead resulted in a new building in the Upper Street. Because this is some distance to the platforms, the construction of two escalators was necessary, which are arranged at a right angle. One of these is the longest escalators in Western Europe; it is 60 meters long and overcomes a difference in height of 27.4 meters.
