AngloGold Ashanti (company notation: AngloGold Ashanti ) is a South African company based in Johannesburg. The mining company promotes gold.

History

2004 merged the Ghanaian mining company Ashanti Goldfields Corporation ( AGC) with the South African mining company AngloGold, a subsidiary of Anglo American plc. Since then called the company AngloGold Ashanti and is the world's third largest gold producer. Today, Anglo American holds 16.3 % stake in AngloGold Ashanti.

2009, the company has advanced into the Mponeng gold mine in South Africa to a depth of 3,770 meters, which holds the world record depths.

Criticism

NGOs and news magazines suggest that the gold mining, particularly by AngloGold Ashanti, especially in Ghana leads to environmental degradation, human rights abuses, advance rate of child labor and poisoning of miners. The chemicals that are used for elution of gold, get into lakes and partly into the drinking water. Also, the Swiss consumer magazine Kassensturz determined miserable working conditions in the gold industry in West Africa: The miners die from mercury poisoning and "Children toil 12 hours a day " away from their family.

Supported by Greenpeace Public Eye Awards 2011 awarded the Negative Award jury at AngloGold Ashanti due to these allegations.
