Années de pèlerinage

The Années de pèlerinage (translated Years of Pilgrimage ) are a collection of 26 character pieces by Franz Liszt for piano solo in three volumes. They offer as it were a compendium of musical romanticism of pianist Franz Liszt. The musical spectrum ranges from virtuosic fireworks to very introverted romantic poetry. More clearly than many other compositions of Liszt, they reveal how the composer musically is always more to himself under the influence of his travels. Particularly interesting in this respect, the third volume, which can comprehend late style especially the development of Liszt. This third volume was significantly later than the first two volumes. More and more still occurs in Liszt's virtuosity in the background towards ever more independent musical thoughts and harmonic experiments.

The title

The title Années de pèlerinage refers to Goethe's famous novel of development, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship. As Wilhelm Meister developed his character on his journey, the composer Liszt takes his travel experiences as an opportunity for new compositions. Multiple quotes Byron's Child Harold's Pilgrimage Liszt. He follows on to other authors of the tradition and romance like Dante, Petrarch, Schiller or Senancour.
