Antennae Galaxies
The Antennae galaxies form a pair of strongly interacting with each other galaxies in the constellation raven. The pair consists of the two galaxies NGC 4038 and NGC 4039th
- NGC 4038 has a surface area of 5.2 ' x 3.1 ' and an apparent magnitude of 10.30 mag.
- NGC 4039 has a surface area of 3.1 ' x 1.6 ' and an apparent magnitude of 10.40 mag.
The merger of the two galaxies in particular the interstellar gas is compressed and star formation induced. The star-forming regions thus formed and the associated emission nebula are visible as bright knots in the spiral arms. The Antennae galaxies were discovered on February 7, 1785 by William Herschel.
