Anthemis glaberrima

Anthemis glaberrima

Anthemis glaberrima is a species of the genus of the dog Chamomile ( Anthemis ) in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). It was classified as one of the 50 most endangered plants of the Mediterranean islands.

Features

Anthemis glaberrima is a one-year stem - Therophyt, achieved the stature heights from 2 to 30 centimeters. The leaf lobes are pointed.

The cage floor is almost flat and its center is pointed conical. The chaff leaves are bald and shorter than the florets. The ray florets are sterile, short, broadly elliptical and pink. The fruits are 1 to 1.25 mm long and almost as wide, granular or nodular achenes. Your ribs are finely wrinkled and her crown is crooked, denticulate membranous and hard nut.

The flowering period is in April.

Occurrence

Anthemis glaberrima is on the two islets Agria Gramvousa ( .825 km ²) and Gramvousa ( 0.722 km ²) endemic, which are upstream in the extreme northwest of Crete. The species grows on limestone rocks.

System

Anthemis glaberrima was first described in 1943 by Karl Heinz Rechinger under the basionym Ammanthus glaberrimus and provided by Werner Greuter in the genus Anthemis 1968.

The species belongs in the genus Anthemis of Ammanthus group. This contains Anthemis glaberrima endemic in the south of the Aegean species Anthemis ammanthus, Anthemis Anthemis filicaulis and tomentella.

Threat and protection

Anthemis glaberrima is in the Red List of IUCN threatened with extinction as ( " Critically Endangered " ) classified as the species has a distribution area of less than 10 square kilometers and with annual species may occur strong fluctuations in the population density. The subpopulation of Agria Gramvousa seems at risk due to grazing and pollution. In contrast, the subpopulation Imeri Gramvousas is relatively isolated and not endangered by human influences, the island is only visited in the summer by tourists. The species is classified as critically endangered in Greece in the National Red Data Book and is protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81. Furthermore, it is listed in the Annex II of the Habitats Directive as a priority species and Annex I of the Bern Convention.

On Agria Gramvousa a protected area (Micro - Reserve ) was established with a size of 4.4 ha for the protection of Anthemis glaberrima. In addition, a campaign was conducted to inform the public and the local authorities on the type. In the seed library of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania seeds of the species were stored.

Due to the wealth of Agria Gramvousa of endemic species, the island should be appointed to the nature reserve. In addition, a management plan should be developed to prevent the ingress of herbivores and invasive plants for the island.
