Anthony Ogogo

Anthony Ogogo Osezua Ojo (born 24 November1988 in Lowestoft ) is an English professional boxer at middleweight. As an amateur boxer he was in 2005 Cadet World champion in the light middleweight division and won the 2012 Olympic bronze medal in the middleweight division.

Amateur career

Anthony Ogogo is the son of an English mother and a Nigerian father and boxing since the age of 10. He belongs to the Triple A Boxing Club Lowestoft and there is coached by John Cremin. In addition, he often trained in the power center of the British boxing federation in Sheffield. At a size of 1.82 meters, he fights at middleweight.

In 2005 he was English Junior Welterweight Champion and won in October of the same year the gold medal in the light middleweight in the 4th Cadet World Championships in Liverpool. He had it enforced against Kemal Bayramow from Turkmenistan, Dante Moore from the USA, Olexandr Mykhalko from Ukraine and Ruslan Derbenew from Russia.

In 2006 he came to welterweight at the 14th Junior World Championships in Agadir and defeated in the first round Martin Lynch from Ireland, before the later gold medalist Julio César Iglesias of Cuba was defeated in the second round. Also at the 20th European Junior Championships in 2007 in Sombor, he was defeated in the second fight the Serbs Aleksandar Spirko.

In 2008 he was English welterweight champion, and in 2010 English middleweight champion. He also won in 2010 even the British Championships in Manchester, reaching the silver medal at the 19th Commonwealth Games in Delhi. At the 38th European Championships of the same year in Moscow, however, he lost in the second fight against Darren O'Neill from Ireland.

At the 16th World Championships 2011 in Baku, he won the first two fights against the Koreans Woo Sung Jae 17:7 and Artyom Chebotaryov from Russia 12:11, before he succumbed to 12:17 Brazilian Falcao Florentino Esquiva on points. In the European Olympic Qualification 2012 in Trabzon, he reached the final and was therefore assigned a starting place in the middleweight division at the Summer Olympic Games in London. There he defeated in the first round Junior Castillo Martinez from the Dominican Republic in the second round 13:6 and the reigning world champion Evhen Khytrov from Ukraine 18:18. In the quarterfinals, he defeated the Germans Stefan Härtel 15:10 and moved into the semi-finals, where he however again the Brazilian Esquiva Falcao Florentino 9:16 succumbed and thus different from a bronze medal from the games.
