Vijender Singh

Vijender Kumar Singh (Hindi: विजेंदर कुमार सिंह; born October 29, 1985 at Kaluwas village in the district of Bhiwani, Haryana ) is an Indian boxer. He won a bronze medal in the middleweight division at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Career

Vijender Kumar grew up in his birthplace, the son of a bus driver and came through a younger brother to boxing, which he first operation only playfully. After attending secondary school in Bhiwani, he came to the Bhiwani Sports Authority of India Center for Boxing and dealt seriously with coach Jagdish Singh with the boxes.

He rapidly developed into an excellent technician who won several regional championships at junior level. There followed several training abroad including in Cuba. Meanwhile, Vijender Singh works at the Haryani Police and works in the Bhiwani Boxing Club have as a coach.

In 2003, Vijender Kumar in the weight class up to 64 kg body weight (at that time light welterweight ) with a win over Harr Inder Singh first Indian Masters. In 2004 and 2005 he was runner-up in each Indian welterweight. For the following years the results of the Indian championships are not known.

His debut in the international ring was Vijender Kumar at the South Asian Championships 2004 in Islamabad. In the light welterweight, he finished there after a final defeat by Faisal Karim from Pakistan 2nd place. In the same year he started already at the Olympic Games in Athens. He lost there but like his first fight against Mustafa Karagollu from Turkey just by points ( 20:25 ) and finished together with the losers of this round of the 17th Place.

In the Asian Championships in 2005 in Ho Chi Minh City Vijender Kumar resigned welterweight in the quarterfinals after one defeat against Reza Ghazzimi from Iran and thus finished 5th. In the same year he also denied the World Championships in Mianyang / China. In welterweight, he won it over Darius Jasevicius from Lithuania on points, but then had the misfortune to Erislandi Lara to take from Cuba, against whom he had to be taken out of the fight. Erislandi Lara was also world champion Vijender Kumar and came on the 17th Place.

In 2006 Vijender Kumar finished in the South Asian Championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in the middleweight division the first place. He defeated while Anuruddha Fernando from Sri Lanka and Allah Bux of Pakistan. Also at the Asian Games 2006 in Doha, he won a medal at middleweight. He suggested there Mustafa Farrah from Syria by points ( 34:18 ), was demolition winner in the second round of Schukuralla Aladjanow from Turkmenistan and was defeated in the semifinals against Bakhtiar Artajew from Kazakhstan on points ( 24:29 ). Finally, he finished at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in the middleweight division 2nd place. After a semi-final victory over Neil Perkins from England he was defeated there in the final against Bongani Mwelase from South Africa.

In 2007 Vijender Kumar came at the 29th Kings Cup in Bangkok at middleweight until the final, where he lost to Elshod Rasulow from Uzbekistan by points ( 5:19 ). In the Asian Championships this year in Ulaanbaatar, he prevailed over Jianzheng Wang from China ( 19:14 ), Mustafa Farrah from Syria ( 21:7 ) and Suriya Prasathinpimai from Thailand to points, before the finals again against Elschod Rasulow by points ( 3:14 ) lost. At the World Championships in Chicago he won first on Ronald Gavriil from Romania by points ( 25:14 ), but then lost to Alfonso Blanco from Venezuela ( 9:13 ), which he again failed to make the top 16 boxers ( second round ) and landed on the 17th Place.

In 2008 Vijender Kumar failed in January in Bangkok at the first Asian Olympic excretion with a 5th place in the middleweight division. After a victory over Jasur Kurbanov of Tajikistan where he lost in the quarterfinals against Cho Deok -Jin from Korea. He therefore went to the Olympic excretion in March 2008 in Astana at the start. He defeated there Mongontsooj Nandin - Erdene of Mongolia ( 23:10 ) Hamyoun Amiri from Iran ( 19:13 ) and Cho Deok -Jin ( 15:3 ) and thus qualified as a tournament winner in the middleweight division for participation in the Olympic games in Beijing.

In Beijing, Vijender Kumar won. He defeated there middleweight Badou Jack of Gambia ( 13:2 ), Angkhan Chomphuphuang from Thailand ( 13:3 ) and Carlos Gongora of Ecuador ( 9:4 ) on points. In the semifinals he met Emilio Correa Bayeux from Cuba, where he narrowly lost after a good fight with 5:8 score hits. By winning the bronze medal he was the first Indian boxer ever to win an Olympic medal.

At the Asia Championships 2009 Kumar won the bronze medal. He won it, inter alia, against Abbo Atoyev, Uzbekistan ( 10:7 ). The same position he won also at the 2009 World Championships, where he had to give up this time beaten in the semifinals Abbo Atoyev ( 7:3).

2010 started for Kumar by winning the Commonwealth Championships and the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, where he in the semifinals to Anthony Ogogo, England (4:3) failed. At the Asian Games in the same year, Kumar won after victories among others in the final over Abbo Atoyev (7:0) the gold medal.

At the 2011 World Championships Kumar lost in the first fight against Emilio Correa, Cuba (16:9). To achieve the so missed qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games still took Kumar in 2012 in the Asian Olympic qualifying tournament in Astana in part, in which he reached the semi-finals and thus the Olympic qualification.

At the Olympic Games in London Kumar struck in the first round Donabek Suzhanov, Kazakhstan ( 14:10), and in the second round Terrell Gausha, USA ( 16:15 ) before the quarter-finals at Abbo Atoyev, Uzbekistan (17-13 ), failed.
