Anthony Salvin

Anthony Salvin ( born October 17, 1799 in Sunderland Bridge, County Durham, † December 17, 1881 in Fernhurst, Sussex ) was a British architect. The main representative of the Gothic revival was primarily known for its reconstruction and restoration work on medieval castles and churches.

After training Salvin began with the repair and restoration of older mansions. His first assignment was independent from 1826 Mamhead Park in Devon, followed in 1831 by Harlaxtan Manor in Lincolnshire. The member of the Society of Antiquaries of London had developed very early a reputation as an expert on medieval architecture and was particularly often in castles and churches in use. So he knew 1835 Norwich Castle with a new facade and repaired the ruins of Newark Castle in Nottinghamschire and Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight.

Salvin, whose working hours, the monument began only stamp out, the buildings often presented here in an idealized previous state is restored. In order to obtain the more often he ripped off also historic structure. During the restoration of the Holy- Sepulchre Church in Cambridge as he built the southern nave completely new, ripped the top part of the central tower completely off and then replaced it with a conical roof. When working on the Norwich Cathedral and Durham Cathedral he built each choir stalls from the 17th century to generous view to aligning it a medieval state. In the later years of his work, Salvin was because of his breaks in a feud with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

Important new buildings of Salvin were Keele Hall in Staffordshire and Thoresby Hall in Nottinghamshire. These buildings would primarily kept in the style of Tudor Revival Architecture. The construction of Peckforton Castle in Manchester led to public debates on the meaning to recreate medieval castles in the 19th century.

1851 Salvin was commissioned to repair the Beauchamp Tower in the fortress of the Tower of London. His work there were so well received that he reorganized Also Salt Tower, Wakefield Tower, White Tower and the Church of St. Peter ad Vincula in the fortress. Salvins neo-Gothic influence was decisive enough that even after the end of his active career John Taylor continued the work in the spirit Salvins. The success of the Tower brought Salvin turn the order also to major modifications at Windsor Castle.

Salvin reduced his workload back after a stroke in 1857 ended his career but until 1879, two years before his death.
