Antigone (Original Title: Antigone, A Tragedy by Sophocles, Αντιγόνη ) is a B / W screen adaptation of the tragedy of Sophocles. The film was in 1961 by the Greek film director and playwright Giorgos Tzavellas ( 1916-1976 ) turned into modern Greek with English subtitles and adheres closely to the ancient presentation of the tragedy. He was ( Berlinale ) presented at the International Film Festival in Berlin in 1961 in the official competition.

Action

Creon takes the throne as the new king of Thebes, after having killed in the battle for the throne two sons of Oedipus. Although Creon has given an order that the body of Polynices to remain unburied, but to his sister opposes the ban and buried her brother by sprinkled him with earth. Creon leaves Antigone walled alive, although the young woman is engaged to his son Haemon. Only seer Teiresias Creon opens his eyes and tells him that the burial ban would enrage the gods.

Creon bury Polynices can and wants to free Antigone, who, however, has hanged himself in the meantime in their prison. Haemon also commits suicide and then Creon, now broken by his own actions, renounces the throne.
