Anton Bettelheim

Anton Bettelheim ( born November 18, 1851 in Vienna, † March 29, 1930 ) was an Austrian literary critic, translator and writer.

Life

Anton Bettelheim was the son of Jewish parents and younger brother of the pianist Caroline of Gomperzes - Bettelheim.

He attended the gymnasium of his native city to the Matura (Abitur ) and in 1869 began to study law at the University of Vienna. In 1873 he was this study successfully awarded the degree of Doctor of Law. complete. Following this, Bettelheim served his clerkship and also worked for a short time in a law firm.

1878 was Bettelheim on his legal career and moved to Munich. At the Ludwig- Maximilians- University, he finished the study subjects of history, literature and philosophy; he heard among others, Wilhelm von Giese Brecht and Michael Bernays, with interruptions by his studies in Paris and London.

1881 Bettelheim went back to Vienna and took over the feuilleton of the Free Neue Presse. At the same time he was appointed also to the theater speakers of German Newspaper. That year he also married the elder daughter of actor couple Ludwig and Zerlina Gabillon, the author and artist Helene Gabillon ( 1857-1946 ). With her he had three children: Louis (1882-1943), Friederike (1884-1943) and Otto Heinrich ( 1887-1903 ). With the historian August Fournier, his brother in law, he occasionally worked together well.

On the idea of Zionism of Theodor Herzl Anton Bettelheim answered strictly negative in the "Münchner General Intelligence " and spoke of "the carnival dream of a hung-over by the Jews noise columnists ".

The dispute has been an increasing emphasis Through his work with literature. His biography of Beaumarchais was highly praised by the audience as well as from the official criticism. In 1907 he was entrusted with the leadership of the General German Biography and until 1910 he held this office. Bettelheim is also considered the founder of the New Austrian Biography, which first appeared in 1923 and which he oversaw until his death.

With over 78 years Anton Bettelheim died on 29 March 1930 in Vienna and found his final resting place.
