Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche

Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche OCD ( born June 13, 1927 in Caçapava do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, † 14 October, 2009 Ivoti, Rio Grande do Sul ) was a Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre.

Life

Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche joined the Order of the Discalced Carmelites at and studied philosophy and theology in Burgos, Spain, and journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul ( PUCRS ). On March 10, 1951 he was ordained priest. He completed doctoral studies in philosophy and literature at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and graduate studies at the University of Vienna and the Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg.

In 1969 he became Pope Paul VI. appointed Titular Bishop of Sutunurca and appointed Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Santa Maria in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. He received his episcopal consecration on 29 June 1969, the Bishop of Santa Maria, Luís Victor Sartori; Co-consecrators were Alfredo Vicente Cardinal Scherer, Archbishop of Porto Alegro, and João Cláudio Colling, Alt- Archbishop of Porto Alegre. In 1971 he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Porto Alegre. His resignation was accepted in 2001 by Pope John Paul II.

Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche was a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church, the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace and the Pontifical Council for the disbelievers, all located at the Roman Curia. For 25 years he was a member of the Theological Commission of the Latin American Episcopal Conference ( CELAM), where he was first president of the Department of the laity, then President of the Department of the unbelievers, and finally founding president of the Department of Culture. In addition, he was a consultant for the Institute for Pastoral Theology Latin America ( ITEPAL ). He wrote several books and numerous essays on Culture, Christianity, inculturation and urban ministry.

He founded the Associação dos Dirigentes Cristãos de Empresas ( ADCE ), an association of Christian Entrepreneurs.

The Brazilian Bishops' Conference ( Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil - cnbb ) said in an obituary about Antônio do Carmo Cheuiche: "He was a gift from God to the Church in Brazil and Latin America. His presence opened the Latin American Catholic Church in the important issues of the day. "
