Antonio José González Zumárraga

Antonio José Cardinal González Zumárraga ( born March 18, 1925 in Pujilí, Cotopaxi, Ecuador Province; † 13 October 2008 Sangolquí in Quito, Ecuador) was Archbishop of Quito.

Life

Antonio José González Zumárraga received his theological and philosophical training in Quito and Salamanca. He earned his doctorate at the University of Salamanca to the doctor of Canon Law and received on 19 June 1951, the sacrament of Holy Orders. From 1951 to 1964 he worked as a parish priest, secretary of the Metropolitan Curia of Quito and lecturer at the Catholic University of Ecuador. From 1964 to 1969 he was chancellor of the Archdiocese of Quito and principal of a preparatory course.

1969 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Tagarata and Auxiliary Bishop of Quito. In 1976 he was Apostolic Administrator, Bishop of Machala 1978.

Pope John Paul II appointed González Zumárraga 1980 Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of Quito. In 1985 he became the successor of Cardinal Pablo Muñoz Vega Archbishop of Quito. In 1995 he was appointed Primate of Ecuador. Pope John Paul II took Antonio José González Zumárraga within the consistory of 21 February 2001 as a cardinal priest with the Roman titular church of Santa Maria in Via in the College of Cardinals to. Antonio José Cardinal González Zumárraga put the management of the Archdiocese of Quito on 21 March 2003 down for reasons of age.
