Antonov An-74

The Antonov An-74 is a STOL transport aircraft for short and medium distances. Originally, this version is the An-72 was developed for civilian supply missions in the Arctic. The two turbofan engines are arranged in front of and above the wings and lead the flow of air over the wing, so as to increase the lift.

Description

The prototype first flew in late 1983. Serial production in Kharkiv was 1985. Due to its STOL characteristics the An-74 comes with 300 meters and 250 meters start landing runway, as in 1987 at their landing on the drifting ice of the polar station SP -27 proved. Their shape also awarded her the coming of a comic book character nicknamed " Cheburashka ". Skis are mounted on the chassis for use in the Arctic. The wing leading edges can be de-iced. Variants

The latest versions of the An- 74T ( freighter ) and An- 74TK -200 (combi freighter ). Here only two crew members are needed, also a higher takeoff weight ( = greater load ) is possible.

The An-74 -300 conventionally suspended under the wing engines. Flight testing started in 2001.

Based on the An-74 -300 new aircraft type has been developed. This was equipped with improved engines and is called Antonov An - 148.
