Aquarium of Genoa

The Aquarium of Genoa ( Italian: Aquarium of Genova) is the second largest aquarium in Europe, behind the L' Oceanographic in Valencia, Spain. It is located on the grounds of the Porto Antico of the Italian port city of Genoa. The Aquarium was established in 1992 on the occasion of the celebrations for the 500 years of the discovery of America opened and expanded several times in a row. Planning and architectural design were among the architects Renzo Piano and Peter Chermayeff. At the time of its opening, it was the second largest aquarium in the world.

The aquarium can be achieved by means of the A7 at the nearby railway station Piazza Principe, the stop for San Giorgio subway or the highway exit Genova Ovest.

The Aquarium

The approximately two hours and 30 minutes engaging tour of the aquarium leads to 39 basins along that track the habitat of many fish and reptiles lifelike. The visible surface of the halls is this 9700 square meter.

Of particular interest are three large seawater pool with dolphins, sharks, seals and turtles in addition to a large number of smaller fish.

An extension of the aquarium consists of a connection of a ship's hull ( with the name Nave Italia ) to the main building. In this there are some open basin with a recreated rainforest and freshwater habitats. In this section of the aquarium is also the possibility to touch some of the fish.
