Archway tube station

Archway is an underground station of the London Underground in the London Borough of Islington. It lies on the boundary of Travelcard Zones 2 and 3, at the junction of several main roads. In the year 2011 there were 8.08 million passengers these of the Northern Line station.

The station building is made of red glazed terracotta bricks. The architect responsible was Leslie Green, created under his direction at the beginning of the 20th century, a total of 28 stations in the same style. Next door is the Archway Tower, a 59 -meter-high office tower, the New Model Army inspired her song Archway Towers. The tower will also have Nick Hornby inspired to write his novel A Long Way Down. The station was opened under the name of Highgate on June 22, 1907 by the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway, a private company predecessor the Northern Line. Here was one of the two northern endpoints. During the 1930s the station was modernized by replacing the original elevators by escalators. Moreover, a second, designed by Charles Holden entrance area was created. On June 11, 1939, the renamed Archway ( Highgate ) was performed. A few weeks later, on July 3, 1939, the extension went to East Finchley in operation. It was followed by two more name changes; January 19, 1941 in Highgate ( Archway ) and on December 1 of 1947, in Archway. The original name Highgate went over to the next following station in the north.
