The bearberry ( Arctostaphylos ) are a genus of flowering plants in the family Ericaceae ( Ericaceae ). There are about 50 species. Especially species-rich genus in western North America is represented.

Features

The species form dwarf shrubs, shrubs or small trees about 6 m high. In Central Europe, only low- lying shrubs trellis occur.

The leaves are alternate. They are oval and the center at the widest. They are serrated margin entire or finely. The petiole is short.

Inflorescences and flowers

The racemose inflorescences consist of a few nodding flowers that are crowded.

The flowers have five, more or less deformed, short sepals. The crown is verwachsenblättrig, with five teeth and has a more spherical shape. There are ten stamens. The dust bag has a thread-like appendages. He opens with a pore or a short gap. The ovary is upper constant.
