Ardud

Erdeed (Romanian Ardud, Hungarian Erdod ) is a small town in the district of Satu Mare in northwest Romania.

Location

Erdeed situated in a hilly region in the north- western Romania. The county capital of Satu Mare is located about 15 km north.

History

The oldest archaeological finds in the region date back to the Bronze Age.

Erdeed 1215 is first mentioned under the name Herdeud.

1378, the town was a regional administrative center. 1481 a castle was built northwest of Erdeed. This soon lost its military significance and was converted into a castle from 1730. In the 19th century the castle fell into disrepair and was finally destroyed in the Second World War.

In the 18th century settled in Erdeed as in other regions of the county Satu Mare German - the Satu Mare Swabians - to.

Until 1918, the village belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and Austria- Hungary. After the First World War he came to Romania, from 1940 to 1944 as a result of the Second Vienna Award temporarily back to Hungary. 2006 Erdeed received the status of a city.

The main industries are wood, the construction industry, agriculture and trade.

Population

1880 lived on the territory of today's 4,071 people, including 1,877 Romanians, 1,227 German, 925 Hungarians and Slovaks 11. 2,159 lived in Ardud itself, the remaining 2,107 in the five incorporated villages today. 1930 172 Jews were also registered. The maximum population was reached in 1977 with 8,393.

As of the 2002 census lived in Erdeed 6,486 inhabitants, of whom 4,219 in the town itself, in 2267 several incorporated villages. 2,082 were Romanians, 1161 Hungarians, 591 Roma and 373 German.

Traffic

Erdeed has no rail connection. The once circulating here little train is shut down. Through the city leads the European Route 81 Regular bus services to Satu Mare.
