Carei

Carei (deprecated Careii Mari; German wholesale Karol, Hungarian Nagykároly ) is a city in north-western Romania with the rank of municipium.

Position of the settlement

The city is situated in Satu Mare County, about a hundred kilometers from Oradea ( Oradea ) and is close to the Hungarian border.

History

Carei was first documented in 1335. After the Treaty of Trianon, it was in 1920 part of Greater Romania. During the time of the Second World War, the city was once again part of Hungary, since the war, it is again in Romania, where it was in 1968 assigned to the Satu Mare County.

Population

The 2002 census gave the following result: 12,667 ( 54.46 %) Hungarians, 9,675 ( 41.6 %) Romanians, 484 (2.08 %) German, 383 (1.65 %) Roma and 51 (0.22 % ) members of other ethnic groups.

Personalities

  • Margit Kaffka (1880-1918), Hungarian writer and feminist, was born here.
  • Joel Teitelbaum (1887-1979), Hasidic theologian, was during the 1920s, here a rabbi.
  • Susanne Barth ( b. 1944 ), German actress, was born here.
  • Adrian Sălăgeanu ( b. 1983 ), the Romanian football player, was born here.
  • Eric Bicfalvi (* 1988), the Romanian football player, was born here.

Attractions

In Carei a castle dating from the 13th century (modifications in neo-Gothic style of the 19th century ) with stunning parkland of 120,000 m².

Sports

Football

In Carei there are two football clubs (Victoria Carei and FC Kaizer Carei ) and a soccer youth club - the CSS Carei. In Carei there are four recreational soccer fields ( partly of concrete floor ) and two club seats, which include Victoria and FC Kaizer Carei.

Twin Cities

Carei has partnerships with the Hungarian cities: Orosháza since 1991, with Nyírbátor since 2000 and with Mátészalka.
