Arduin of Ivrea

Arduin of Ivrea (* 955, † 1015 in Fruttuaria ) was from 1001 to 1015 Margrave of Ivrea, 1002-1004 King of Italy.

Life

Arduin was the son of Margrave Dado. Due to unexplained entitlements he came to power by 990 as Margrave of Upper Italian Margraviate of Ivrea.

Due to its policy of relying on the partially illegitimate owners of church property, he came into conflict with the local bishops, especially in the city of Vercelli, whose bishop Peter of Vercelli he had assassinated 997. After Arduin had been condemned and excommunicated 999 by a synod in Rome, he lost at the instigation of Bishop Leo of Vercelli most of his possessions.

After the death of Holy Roman Emperor Otto III. Arduin had himself elected in 1002 to the King of Italy. His opponents, especially Leo of Vercelli, however, were on the side of the Roman-German King Henry II sent Henry Otto of Carinthia, who was beaten by Arduin 1003 military. 1004 drew Henry himself against Arduin, was able to achieve military success and was crowned king of Italy.

To negotiate with Heinrich to Arduin said only ready in 1013, but he refused. 1014/15 tried Arduin together with a large needle opposition one last rebellion, but failed because of the resistance of the Marquis of Canossa and the Bishop of Vercelli. Arduin withdrew to the monastery Fruttuaria, where he died in 1015. After his death, the Margraviate of Ivrea disbanded.
