Arequipa (Region)

The Arequipa Region ( Región Arequipa Spanish, Quechua Ariqipa suyu ) is a region in southern Peru. Covering an area of ​​63345.39 km ² 1,140,214 people (2005 ). The capital city is Arequipa.

Geography

Arequipa is located on the Pacific Ocean. The coast is partly rocky and unapproachable, partly also characterized by bathing fair sand beaches. A few rivers flow down into the deep valleys of the Andes to the Pacific and allow irrigated agriculture. The interior is generally very dry and gradually rises up to the majestic volcano chain ( Cordillera Volcánica ), is the highest peak of the ice-covered Coropuna with 6,425 meters. Behind the chain of volcanoes of the Altiplano slowly begins to spread, the wide plateau, which is still divided here by some other mountain ranges.

The Sierra Arequipa is furrowed by deep gorges such as the Cotahuasi Canyon or the Colca Canyon, which is considered as the deepest gorge in the world.

Cities

The city of Arequipa is the all-dominating economic, political and cultural center of the region. The two most important port cities are Mollendo and Matarani.
