Arith

Arith is a town in the French department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes.

Geography

Arith is at 712 m above sea level. M., about 20 km northeast of the town of Chambery (air line). The farming village extends to the northwest of the Savoie département, in the massif of the Wallows, on a terrace on the western edge of the wide valley basin of Chéran, at the foot of the Montagne de Bange.

The area of ​​24.27 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the massif of the Wallows. The eastern border is formed by the Ruisseau de Saint -François, respectively, from its confluence with the Chéran. This crosses a valley widening here and occurs north of Arith in the cluse de Bange a, a characteristic Klus, with which he breaks through the edge of the chain bauges. From the river, the municipality's area extends westward across the terrace of Arith up on the broad ridge of the Montagne de Bange. History

The territory of Arith was already inhabited during the Roman period. It Roman tombs and coins were discovered. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1356 under the name Aricum. The place name probably goes to the Gallo-Roman personal name Ar return (r ) icus. In the 15th century belonged to the Arith Kastlanei Le Châtelard.

Attractions

The village of Saint-Laurent church was built in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style. A chapel stands in the hamlet Montagny.

Population

With 373 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Arith is one of the small communities of the department of Savoie. After the population declined sharply in the first half of the 20th century, a significant population increase has been recorded since the early 1980s thanks to the beautiful residential area again.

Economy and infrastructure

Arith was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture, especially dairy farming and animal husbandry, embossed village.
