Aillon-le-Vieux

Aillon -le- Vieux is a commune in the French department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes.

Geography

Aillon -le- Vieux is located at 920 m above sea level. M., about 17 km northeast of the town of Chambery (air line). The mountain village is located in the northwest of the Savoie département, in the massif of the Wallows, on the eastern slope of the valley of the Ruisseau d' Aillon, at the foot of the Grand Colombier.

The area of ​​21.63 km ² municipal area includes a strong section in relief of the massif of the Wallows. The central part is occupied by a hollow which is dehydrated to Chéran by the Ruisseau d' Aillon north. In geological terms, the valley of Aillon forms a syncline. In the west the valley is flanked by the densely forested slopes of Mount Margériaz (up to 1845 m above sea level. M. ). The border runs along the narrow ridge which runs from the top to the northeast. To the east of the valley rises the Grand Colombier, on with 2043 meters above sea level. Neighboring communities of Aillon -le- Vieux are Châtelard in the north, and École La Compôte in the east, Aillon -le- Jeune in the south and Le Noyer in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Aillon in 1158 under the name de Allione. Later, the spellings Domus de Allionis ( 1178 ), Allonis ( 1223 ) and Prioratus de Ayllone appeared ( in the 14th century). The place name comes from the personal name Allio, Allion or Allionis. In the secluded valley floor east of Aillon -le- Jeune was in 1184 at the instigation of Humbert III. of Savoy founded the Carthusian monastery Aillon. The monks made ​​the valley cultivated, whereupon settled here settlers from the surrounding areas. It was not until 1803, the valley was divided into two parishes. This eventually resulted also in 1863 splitting the community Aillon in the independent communities of Aillon -le- Vieux and Aillon -le- Jeune.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint -Donat was built on the site of an earlier building in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style. Only the tower of the old church has been preserved. A chapel is located in the hamlet of Le Cimeteret.

Population

With 177 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Aillon -le- Vieux is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Savoie. After the population declined sharply in the first half of the 20th century, it remained fairly constant in recent decades.

Economy and infrastructure

Aillon -le- Vieux was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture, especially dairy farming and animal husbandry, embossed village.
