Army Group Ostmark

The Army Group Ostmark was a major unit of the Army of the Wehrmacht during the Second World War. She was supreme command each changing armies as well as many special forces and was born from the Army Group South.

Generally

The Army Group Ostmark was created by the renaming of Army Group South in April 1945. Having Army Group South had been defeated in Hungary and had retired to Austria, the Austrians took over Colonel General Lothar Rendulic the command.

The last headquarters of Rendulic was in Rothschild Castle Waidhofen an der Ybbs, where Rendulic agreed on May 6, 1945, American negotiators the terms of the armistice, which was signed in Steyr on May 7, with the commander of the Third U.S. Army. The next day Rendulic left the castle finally and went with his staff in American captivity.

Supreme Commander

When General Rendulic was really commander in chief, is given differently in different sources. April 7, April 2 or later is given in the sources. What is certain is that the Army Group was disbanded on 8 May with the surrender of Germany.

Subordinate units

Note: The 6th Panzer Army is equated with the 6th SS Panzer Army under Colonel squad leader Josef Dietrich. This unit was formed on September 6, 1944, and sided inserts on the Western Front ( Battle of the Bulge ) and then as part of Army Group South / Ostmark in Hungary and Austria.
