Arsenal tube station

Arsenal is an underground station of the London Underground in the London Borough of Islington. It is located in the Travelcard Zone 2, close to the Arsenal Stadium, the disused football stadium of FC Arsenal at Highbury. In the year 2011 there were 3.07 million passengers served by the Piccadilly Line station.

History

The opening of the station took place on December 15, 1906 by the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway, the predecessor company of the Piccadilly Line. The original name was Gillespie Road. After Arsenal had moved into its new stadium in 1913, urged his manager Herbert Chapman to a name change. Finally, the station was renamed on October 31, 1932 in Arsenal ( Highbury Hill ). 1960 was the text in parentheses away. The wall tiles that show the original name of Gillespie Road in big letters have been preserved. Due to the terrorist attacks of 7 July 2005, the station was closed for several weeks; on August 4, was the re-opening.

Plant

The station building is located on a narrow street in the middle of a residential area of terraced houses in the Victorian style. It originated in a gap between two houses. The architect Leslie Green turned it to the typical " house style " of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London: blood red glazed terracotta brick, large semicircular windows in the floor and toothed cornices. In the early 1930s the building was indeed completely rebuilt and widened by the demolition of a neighboring house, but Arsenal still owns one of the narrowest facades on the entire network of the Underground.

Unusually for an underground station of the tube type is the lack of escalators and elevators, and instead a little over 100 meters long ramp to the platforms. This is because on the one hand, the low depth, on the other hand, the position of the tunnels under the tracks of the East Coast Main Line. Because of its location away from main roads Arsenal is far less frequented than other stations on this line. On match days, the Arsenal, the station will continue to be used on average, as the Emirates Stadium opened in 2006, is also not far away.
