Artemis ( greek Αρτέμιδα, Artemis ') is small town in Greek region Attica. Occasionally, even the old, until 1977, the official name Loutsa (Greek Λούτσα ) will be used. The arvanitische name Loutsa means damp ' and shows that the area was once largely swamp.

By 2010 Artemida was an independent municipality. On 1 January 2011 it was merged with the neighboring municipality of Spata to the municipality Spata - Artemida, where she has since formed a district.

Geography

Artemida is located on Petalischen Golf and is located 25 km away from Athens. North of the village includes Rafina and south to Porto Rafti. To the west lies the Airport Athens Eleftherios Venizelos and the municipality of Spata. Artemida is divided into 15 districts. These are among others:

History

Was called in ancient times Artemida Halai Araphenides ( Alai Araphenides ) and the Küstentrittye Araphen the tribe Aigeis was assigned. The name Halai can infer ancient salt production. In Halai Araphenides Orestes to have landed after he had fled together with Iphigenia and Pylades from the land of Tauris. He built the Taurian Artemis (Artemis Tauropolos ) a temple and donated the entrained wooden statue of the god. Instead of human sacrifice as they reportedly offered up the Taurians Artemis is established here by Euripides to sacrifice the custom of human blood in which a man with the sword to inflict a cut.

Today on the coast of Artemida still visible foundations originate from a peripteral from the 4th century BC sanctuary of Artemis. He had a size of 12 m to 19 m with 6 × 13 columns.
