Arthur Frank Mathews

Arthur Frank Mathews ( born October 1, 1860 in Markesan, Wisconsin; † February 19, 1945 in San Francisco ) was an American painter tonalistischer and a founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Trained both as an architect and as an artist, he had a significant influence on the evolution of Californian art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His students include Granville Redmond, Xavier Martinez, Armin Hansen, Percy Gray, Gottardo Piazzoni, Maynard Dixon and Francis McComas.

Early years

Mathews lived until the age of 6 years in Markesan. His father was an architect and moved in 1866 to San Francisco. From his father Mathews learned architecture, he studied painting at the San Francisco School of Design under the influence of Virgil Williams. In San Francisco, he also worked as an illustrator in a lithography business. He studied art in Paris at the Académie Julian from 1884 to 1889, after which he returning to San Francisco, the color intensity of Paul Gauguin and James McNeill Whistler's Tonalism brought.

Life in San Francisco

After his return from Paris, he became director of the San Francisco School of design to the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Thereupon he opened and his wife Lucia, an artist, the Mathews Furniture Store in San Francisco. This allowed him his skills as craftsmen, designers and painters live out. He was regarded as one of the driving forces in the reconstruction of the Arts after the devastation of 1906, culminating in the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915 ). He spared the impressionist style, cultivated classical Tonalism and promoted the Arts and Crafts Movement as a style. Sometimes his work is known as Art Nouveau.

His travels took him to the Santa Catalina Iceland, to Carmel -by-the -Sea and Monterey. His most important work techniques were oil paintings, water colors, pastels, gouaches and Frescen. In his decorative work he and Lucia on painting from photo frames and other furniture enjoyed. Outstanding examples of his paintings in hand-painted frames of the pair can be found in the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum of California.
