Arthur Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore

Arthur Charles Hamilton - Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore GCMG (* November 26 1829 in Argyll House, London, England; † January 30, 1912 in Chelsea, London ) was a British colonial official.

As the youngest son of the future British Prime Minister George Hamilton - Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, he attended after high school at a boarding school, Trinity College, Cambridge, where he became in 1849 chairman of the Cambridge Union Society. After his dissertation in 1851, he worked from 1852 to 1855 as private secretary to his father, the Prime Minister.

In 1861 he went as Lieutenant - Governor of New Brunswick in Canada. From 1866 to 1870 he was governor of Trinidad and Tobago, followed his term as Governor of Mauritius ( 1871-1874 ). In addition, he was Governor of Fiji ( 1875-1880 ), Governor of New Zealand ( 1880-1883 ), and finally Governor of Ceylon ( 1883-1890 ).

In 1893 he was created Baron Stanmore, of Great Stanmore in the County of Middlesex, levied. The title passed to his eldest son George after his death.
