Arthur Havelock

Arthur Elibank Havelock ( born February 21, 1844 in Bath, England, † June 25, 1908 ) was a British colonial administrator and governor of Sierra Leone, Natal, Madras, Ceylon and Tasmania.

Life

Havelock, a nephew of Henry Havelock was born in 1844 as the fifth son of Lieutenant Colonel William Havelock and Caroline Elizabeth Chaplin. In the same year his family moved to India, where his father commanded a cavalry regiment ( 14th King's Hussars ) and 1848 fell in the battle of Ramnagar in the Second Sikh War. Then his family briefly returned to England, but left in 1850 in the Indian Udagamandalam down. There Havelock attended school.

In 1860 he began studying at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. After his promotion to lieutenant on April 10, 1866 followed by stationing in Gibraltar, Mauritius, and the Cape Colony. In 1873 he was aide- de-camp of the Governor of Mauritius. From 1874 he was employed in various positions within the colonial administration of the Seychelles and later in the Fiji Islands.

In March 1877 he left the army with the rank of captain and joined the civil administration of the colonies. Initially he was sent to the West Indies, where he was President of Nevis. In 1878 he came as an administrator to Saint Lucia, then to the Seychelles. In February 1881 he was entrusted in Sierra Leone with his first governorship. In 1885 he was appointed Governor of Trinidad. In 1886 he became governor of Natal, 1890 by Ceylon. From 1896 to 1900 he was finally Governor of Madras.

After his return to England he more governorships were offered that he had, however, reject due to his poor health. Havelock finally accepted the offer as governor of Tasmania and arrived there on 8 November 1901. His health deteriorated in the subsequent period, however, continued and he performed after two and a half years back on January 6, 1904. In April of the same year Havelock Hobart left and returned to England. There he settled in Torquay. After the death of his wife, Anne Grace at the beginning of 1908, died on June 25, also Havelock itself
