William Cox (governor)

William John Ellis Cox ( born April 1, 1936 in Hobart, Tasmania ), officially: " His Excellency the Honourable William John Ellis Cox ," is an Australian lawyer and judge. He was from 2004 to 2008 Governor of Tasmania.

Life

Cox attended Xavier College in Melbourne and then studied at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. He was admitted to the bar in 1960, received in 1976 the Magistrate and in 1978 became Queen's Counsel ( Attorney-General ). 1982 Cox was a member of the Federal Court of Australia, from 1995 to 2004 he was its president.

Cox was appointed in 1999 by Queen Elizabeth II for his extraordinary efforts to Companion of the Order of Australia ( AC). Even before that, he was with the Reserve Force Decoration (RFD ) and the Army 's Efficiency Decoration (ED ), particularly for his work in Vietnam, excellent.

In August 2004, he became a Managing Governor of Tasmania as the successor of Richard Butler; in December 2004, he was appointed on the proposal of the Tasmanian Prime Minister Paul Lennon of Queen Elizabeth II Governor of Tasmania. Since April 2, 2008, the Governor Peter Underwood.
