Arthur Loveridge ( born May 28, 1891 in Penarth, Wales, † February 16, 1980 at St. Helena ) was a British biologist and herpetologist. He described the wildlife in East Africa and published a large number of new taxa, including reptiles, and gave them their scientific name.

Life

Since his childhood he was interested in natural history. He gained his first experience at the National Museum of Wales and the Manchester Museum, before becoming in 1914 curator of the newly established British East Africa Museum in Nairobi, Kenya, today the National Museum of Kenya.

In 1924 he went to the USA and became a contributor to the herpetological section of Harvard University. In 1927 he became curator at the university. In the following years he took part in several expeditions to Tanzania and Malawi.

In 1957, he left Harvard University and spent his retirement at St. Helena, where he died on 16 February 1980.

Dedikationsnamen

Were named after him the following reptile species:

  • Afroedura loveridgei ( Broadley, 1963)
  • Anolis loveridgei Schmidt, 1936
  • Atractus loveridgei Amaral, 1930
  • Elapsoidea loveridgei Parker, 1949
  • Emoia loveridgei Brown, 1953
  • Melanoseps loveridgei Brygoo & Roux- Esteve, 1982
  • Typhlops loveridgei Constable, 1949

Ernst Hartert has dedicated to him in 1922 the scientific name of the orange-bellied Sunbird ( Cinnyris loveridgei ), the man who had collected the type specimen. In English there is therefore also the trivial name Loveridge 's Sunbird. So Hartert wrote:

"In the Tring Museum, v. 24, 1921, collected by Arthur Loveridge, after splat the species is named. "
