Arthur Maxwell House

Arthur Maxwell House, OC ( born August 10, 1926 in Glovertown, Newfoundland, † October 17, 2013 ) was a Canadian neurologist. From 1997 to 2002 he was vice- governor of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Biography

After schooling House studied medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax and graduated in 1952. He continued his medical education at the Neurological Institute of McGill University in Montreal continued and practiced thereafter from 1959 to 1966 in St. John's is the only neurologist his home province.

As such, House was also instrumental in the construction of the medical faculty of Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, where he worked from 1963 until his retirement in 1993 as professor of neurology and in several administrative positions. He was also one of the leading pioneers in the field of telemedicine and distance learning. For his services he was in 1989 a member of the Order of Canada.

Governor General Roméo LeBlanc sworn House in 1997 as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. He held until 2002, this representative office. In addition, he was active in many charitable organizations such as the Art Gallery of Newfoundland, the Agnes Pratt Nursing Home and the Botanical Garden Memorial University. For its political, social, and professional services he was therefore appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2005.
