Anthony Musgrave

Anthony Musgrave KCMG ( born August 31, 1828October 9, 1888 ) was governor of various British colonies. He was the third of 11 children of Anthony Musgrave and Mary Harris Sheriff in St John's, Antigua, to the world. His wife is the namesake for the Lady Musgrave Island.

Time in North America

After years of service to the British Crown in the Caribbean Musgrave was appointed in September 1864, Governor of Newfoundland. During his tenure, he focused primarily on to enter into negotiations with other British colonies in North America, to form together the so-called Canadian confederation. Musgrave failed in its intention, however. Canada was proclaimed on July 1, 1867, Newfoundland joined in only eight years later.

After the death of Frederick Seymour Musgrave was appointed in August 1869 to the Governor of the United Colonies of Vancouver Iceland and British Columbia. Despite major financial and administrative difficulties within the colony succeeded Musgrave to make British Columbia in less than two years for the sixth province of Canada. British Columbia eventually joined in July 1871 Canada.

Natal, Australia and Jamaica

After a short tenure as Governor of Natal ( province ) Musgrave took over the post as Governor of South Australia. He supported the efforts by additional taxation, the inclusion of larger loans in order to finance the major expansion of the rail network and the importation of a large number of immigrants. During his tenure in Australia Musgrave married his second wife Jeanie Ludinda Field, the daughter of David Dudley Field. With her he had a daughter names Joyce, who died in Adelaide 1874.

After three and a half years, Musgrave returned to the Caribbean and became governor of Jamaica. He ruled the colony for six years and has focused primarily on improving the cultural life. Musgrave initiated including the Jamaica Scholarship and helped in the establishment of the Institute of Jamaica with.

Musgrave last stop brought him back to Australia. As Governor of Queensland Musgrave was more a kind of political observers due to its advancing age. He died in 1888 during his tenure in Brisbane sitting before his desk.
