Arturo Estrada Hernández

Arturo Hernández Estrada ( born July 30, 1925 in Panindicuaro / Michoacán ) is a Mexican painter.

Biography

Estrada was trained in painting first with Miguel Moreno and studied from 1942, the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado " La Esmeralda" in Mexico City under Raúl Anguiano, Feliciano Peña and José Chávez Morado. After Antonio M. Ruiz took over the management of the " La Esmeralda" and reformed the training, Estrada was assigned to the class of artist Frida Kahlo. Diego Rivera also was one of his teachers. In 1946 he completed his studies of painting. Together with Guillermo Monroy and Arturo García Bustos, he founded the Association Artistas Jóvenes Revolucionarios (boy revolutionary artists). He was one of the last students of Frida Kahlo and later a member of the Los Fridos designated group of artists who painted the mural " Pulqueria Posada del Sol " and which also included Arturo Garcia Bustos, Guillermo Monroy and Fanny Rabel. From 1948 he taught as a master at the " La Esmeralda". In the same year he also assisted José Clemente Orozco in the mural at the Escuela Normal de Maestros. From 1951 to 1952 he assisitierte Diego Rivera in his work at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Estrada, who was also a member of the Frente Nacional de Artes Plásticas ( FNAP ), also supported Juan O'Gorman in 1953 when the work on the mosaic image " El Aire " Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Obras in Públicas ( SCOP ). A year later he became a member of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana. In 1958 he undertook a study trip to Europe. He took part in the Inter- graphic 76 in Berlin and was there also on the Mexican muralism. In 1983 he became director of " La Esmeralda".

Estrada's works are in numerous domestic and foreign art museums. He received several honorary mentions and awards, including the "Un Año de Pintura " award from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, the " Tlacuilo " prize of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana and in 1954 awarded him Award of the U.S. William and Noma Copley Foundation.
