Arvo Valton

Arvo Valton (actually Arvo Vallikivi; born December 14, 1935 in Märjamaa ) is an Estonian writer.

Life

Arvo Valton was born the son of an entrepreneur in northwestern Estonia. From 1943 to 1949 he attended primary school in Märjamaa ( circle Rapla ). With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, he and his parents were deported to Siberia in the Novosibirsk Oblast. In 1954 he was allowed to return in the Estonian SSR. From 1954 to 1959 Valton studied at the Polytechnic Institute Tallinn (Estonian Tallinna Polütehniline Instituut ) at the Faculty of Chemistry and mining. He completed his studies there as a mining engineer.

From 1959 to 1961 Valton was at chemical plant engaged in the North Estonian Maardu, from 1961 to 1968 in a factory for measuring tools in Tallinn. At the same time he trained as a screenwriter in distance learning in Moscow. He devoted himself more and more to writing. As early as 1960 he had begun to write. In 1965, the at the Writers' Union of the Estonian SSR, which he was Deputy Chairman from 1989 to 1992.

From 1968 to 1975 he lived as a freelance writer in Southern Estonia. Subsequently, he was employed by the Estonian state film company Tallinnfilm. In 1992, shortly after regaining of Estonian independence, Valton was elected as a deputy in the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). In 1995 he resigned as deputy.

Writer

Arvo Valton has numerous short fiction, short stories, novellas and novels written. He also wrote literary criticism, poetry, aphorisms, travel stories and plays. He also created the script of the Estonian cult movie Viimne reliikvia (1969 ) and other screenplays come. In 1980, the opera Lend Eino Tamberg premiered in Tallinn, had written the libretto for the Valton. A part of his work, which took a critical look with the Soviet Union or was influenced by the Soviet Union reluctantly watched existentialism, could appear because of censorship after its collapse. Since the 1980s, Valton denounced environmental destruction, fought for Estonian independence and the rights of the Finno - Ugric peoples in Russia.
