Geography

Geographical location

The city extends from Maardu - lake to the Pirita River and is adjacent to Viimsi, Jõelähtme and Tallinn.

Boroughs

The city is divided into four areas:

  • Industrial area on the territory of the former city Kroodi, near the Tallinn highway - Narva and the port of Muuga
  • Downtown Maardu (including Kallavere )

History

From 1980 to 1991 Maardu belonged to the territory of Tallinn. On 7 November 1991 Maardu was appointed by Arnold Rüütel an independent city.

Population Development

The first stage in the development of the city began with the founding of the chemical factory in 1949. The second stage was initiated in the late 1970s by the construction of the power plant. Today Maardu with almost 17,000 inhabitants, of whom a majority are Russians, the seventh largest city of Estonia.

Economy and infrastructure

Traffic

Two kilometers south of the highway leads Maardu 1 Tallinn - Narva ( - St. Petersburg) ( European Route 20) over what on the border with Russia, offers easy access to Narva. The 1986 newly built harbor in Muuga is one of the largest in the country, around 90% of goods are handled here.

Media

Since 1995, a newspaper published in Maardu in Estonian and Russian. There is also a cable TV network.

Education

Maardu has four schools, two for Russian-speaking Estonians and one for children, and an art school. At all four schools a total of about 3,000 students are taught by 200 teachers.
