Anija Parish

Anija is a rural municipality in Harju County Estonia with an area of 517 km ². It has 6411 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2005).

Besides the main town, the city Kehra, belong to the municipality the villages Aavere, Alavere, Anija, Arava, Härmakosu, Kaunissaare, Kehra küla, Kihmla, Kuusemäe, Lehtmetsa, Lilli, Linnakse, Looküla, Lükati, Mustjõe, Paasiku, Parila, Part Saare, Pikva, Pillapalu, Rasivere, Raudoja, Rooküla, Salumetsa, Salumäe, Soodla, Ülejõe Uuearu, Vetla, Vikipalu and Voose.

Anija was first mentioned in 1241 as Hanaegus documented. The Good ( German: Hannijöggi, later Annia ) was founded in 1355-1482. It belonged to the noble families Zoege, Staël von Holstein, von Ungern- Sternberg and by choice. The two storey residential building ( main building) was built in 1801. The park was expanded in the early 20th century.

In the Estonian literature Anija received meaning through the social-revolutionary novel Kui Anija mehed Tallinnas käisid ( " When the men of Anija to Tallinn went " ) by Eduard Vilde, the reference 1858 takes on true events of the year, as residents of Anija against the high tax burden demonstrated.
