Ascog

Ascog is a small town on the east coast of the sparsely populated Scottish island of Bute and thus belongs administratively to the Unitary Authority Argyll and Bute. It is about 2.5 km south-east of Rothesay on the Bay Ascog Bay on the Firth of Clyde. In the census of 1961 259 inhabitants were recorded in Ascog. By 1971, the population had decreased to 230. Ascog is located just off the A844, opening up large parts of the island. One kilometer to the west is Loch Ascog.

History

Ascog developed around the lands of the coming of the 17th century Ascog House. Later, mainly Glasgow businessmen built around more villas and country houses in the Victorian style. In 1842 the town was given its own church. As an architect David Hamilton acted. The painter Montague Stanley is located on the associated cemetery buried. Several of the historic buildings have been converted to apartments in the meantime.
