History

The company was founded in 1948 in Madras, India, as Ashok Motors, to assemble vehicles of the British company Austin. 1955, the name was changed to the participation of Leyland Ashok Leyland. In the same year began the manufacture of commercial vehicles.

Takeover by Hinduja and Iveco

1987 was taken over by the Indian company Ashok Leyland and Hinduja Iveco. After this, Iveco truck models were included with the model program, the Ford Iveco Cargo as adopted by Ashok Leyland Ecomet. Ashok Leyland in 1993 was the first Indian car manufacturer to be certified to ISO 9002. In July 2006, Hinduja took over all the shares in the holding company of Iveco.

Nissan Ashok Leyland

In 2007, a joint venture with Ashok Leyland Nissan with a common manufacturing facility in Chennai. The joint venture consists of three companies:

  • Ashok Leyland -Nissan Pvt. Ltd.: . Manufacturing facility in Chennai owned by 51% and 49 % Ashok Leyland Nissan
  • Nissan Ashok Leyland Powertrain Pvt. Ltd.: . Production facility for engines and transmissions, 51 % and 49% of Nissan Ashok Leyland
  • Nissan Ashok Leyland Technologies Pvt. Ltd.: . Development center owned 50:50 by the two partners.

Dr. V. Sumantran, Executive Vice Chairman of Hinduja Automotive Limited and a Director of Ashok Leyland is the Chairman of the Powertrain company and the board of the other two companies. The joint venture was to times the largest financial investment in the Indian automotive industry. First product was the Ashok Leyland Dost.
