Asius

Asius ( Ἄσιος ancient Greek, Latin Asius ) in ancient times was a western Asia Minor, male first name.

Importance

The original meaning is unknown. Later the name was understood as " the Asische " - ie someone who comes from the asischen country, which corresponds to about the later Lydia.

Strabo writes that it is near the city of Sardis in Lydia is a place that the locals Wiese ( gr λειμών ) and Asische of Homer Aue was called as would have been in the vicinity found a Heroon for Kaystrius and Asius. Of this, the term is derived Asisches country and this could possibly be the origin of the name Asia. Herodotus noted in this regard that the Lydians claimed that the name of Asia Asies, the son of Cotys and grandson of Manes, was derived.
