Askwith

Askwith is an English village and civil parish with 220 inhabitants ( as of 2001). It belongs to the administrative district of the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Geography

Askwith is located near the border with West Yorkshire County, about 5 miles east of the spa town of Ilkley and around 4 kilometers northwest of the town of Otley. The nearest large town is 20 km away, Leeds.

The place is located in Wharfedale, a valley in the Yorkshire Dales. Near it flow several streams such as the East and the West Beck Beck, which lead south into the River Wharfe. The landscape is characterized by Moore.

History

Askwith place in 1086 created the Domesday Book mention. There are known as owners of the land Gospatric, Berenger of Tosny and William of Percy. The place belonged to the Parish Weston and Upper Claro wapentake. His name is of Scandinavian origin and is derived from the Old Norse words askr ( ash tree) and vithr (tree, wood ) from. Variations thereof were Ascvid ( 1086 ), Ascwyth, Askwith and Askewith ( 1285-1316 ) and Askwyth (1320 ).

Traffic

From Askwith lead from three streets. About the West Lane leads to Ilkley, from where there are connections to the main road A65 which connects Leeds and Kendal. The Weston Lane leads to Otley and the Moor Lane in the direction of about 7 kilometers north convenient place Blubberhouses with access to the A59.
