Assyrian independence

The national question of the Assyrians referred to the political question of the Assyrians as a Mesopotamian national ethnic group.

History

The national question of the indigenous people of Mesopotamia went through several phases in its development:

In the first phase, the basis for the realization of a national concept for the Syrian Christians was created. The awakening of a non-denominational independent national consciousness played a major role. The focus was on the concept of Syrian Christianity and of its particular creed. But the origin homeland Mesopotamia ( Assyrians / Syrians also called Chaldo - Assyrians ) as the historic home of all Syrian Christians was taken. A mesopotamia related nationalism formed in the course of time on the church interests. Both in the Middle East as well as in the Assyrian diaspora, particularly in the U.S., the flow strengthened. Emigrated thought leaders such as Farid Nazha, Gabriel Ibrahim and Naum Faiq Some stood out.

In the second phase of the Assyrismus was no consideration in the formation of states. The ideas were transferred to a common folklore from the social, cultural and political field of the affected denominations. For the national cause of the Assyrians, the existence should be obtained and a common identity as ethnically independent people in Mesopotamia be found. So it became a domestic political problem of the Ottoman Empire.

In the third phase, the persecution by the Iraqi dictatorship was to be feared. This was reflected in 1919 in the demand for the recognition of the genocide of the Assyrians of 1915-18 resist. It was the return home with the desire for a separate state for a significant portion of the Assyrians to the political hope. The development in Iraq was not likely to find its own place, and strengthened the nationalist orientation of the movement.

In the fourth phase since 1990, most political organizations of the Assyrians and other Syriac Christian denominations were established. But its officials often lack the practical political experience in order to achieve political agreement and to form coalitions with other forces. Avoid because of their weakness mostly direct political confrontation and seek compromises to secure their existence in this way.

2006 and 2007, an internationally recognized security zone to protection from violence, persecution and expulsion is required priority. An important aspect of the Assyrian National Question is to achieve human rights. For an Assyrian organization is sought from all Assyrian organizations, cultural and religious groups around the world and summarize scattered sporadically active groups to a force. The failure would encourage the Assyrian exodus from Mesopotamia probably, and in the long term the Assyrian nation-building would break or completely prevented.
