The Astrolabe Reef is located in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand, near Motiti Iceland. The reef, which can be seen at low water, is a known Tauchgebiert.

The name was inspired Astrolabe Reef by Jules Dumont d' Urville, who named it on February 16, 1827 his ship, the Astrolabe.

On 5 October 2011, the container ship Rena ran onto the reef and sprang a leak. The ensuing oil spill off New Zealand polluted the surrounding beaches and led to a mass extinction at the local bird and fish population here.
