Astyanax (fish)

Astyanax mexicanus, below the normal form above, known as blind Höhlensalmler blind and non-pigmented cave form.

Astyanax is a species-rich genus of freshwater fish from the family of the Real tetras ( Characidae ). Astyanax species occur to the southern North America (Arizona, New Mexico) from temperate South America ( Patagonia) over Central America. The genus was named after Astyanax, the son of the Trojan king's son Hector and his wife Andromache. The genus belongs to the blind Höhlensalmler an often sold as a curiosity freshwater ornamental fish.

Features

Astyanax species, 4.3 to 22 inches long and have an elongated, laterally strongly flattened shape. Characteristic of the genus is the Unterkieferbezahnung, which always consists of 4 to 5 large mehrspitzigen teeth in the front and 5 to 10 very much small teeth on the sides. Astyanax species have roundhouse. The lateral line is complete, the anal fin is medium long, forked tail fin deeply. The color is usually silver. Often a dark shoulder spot is present, a dark greenish longitudinal tie or a dark spot on the caudal peduncle. The fins are usually yellowish or reddish and wearing a white lace. Females are larger than males and especially well to distinguish the spawning period by its fuller body of the slimmer figure.

Astyanax species are omnivorous and very adaptable in terms of temperature and water quality.

Outer systematics

Astyanax no subfamily is currently assigned. The genus is eponymous for the monophyletic clade within the Astyanax tetra rights to which they are expected along with four other genera.
