Atsuko Tanaka (artist)

Atsuko Tanaka (Japanese田中 敦 子, Atsuko Tanaka, born February 10, 1932 in Osaka, † December 3, 2005 in Asuka ) was a Japanese painter, illustrator and performance artist. She was a member of the avant-garde Gutai artists' association.

Life and work

Atsuko Tanaka started in 1950 a preparatory studies at the Osaka - Shiritsu Bijutsu Kenkyujo Bijutsukan Fusetsu (大阪 市立 美术馆 付 设 美术 研究所, dt " affiliated Art Research Institute of the City Art Museum of Osaka ") for the entrance examination at the art school. 1951 Tanaka takes on their studies in the Department of Western painting for the Kyoto Shiritsu Bijutsu Daigaku -, today - Kyoto Shiritsu Daigaku Geijutsu. In 1955, Tanaka became a member of the artist group Gutai.

In 1965, she emerges from Gutai, together with the artist Akira Kanayama. A little later she marries Kanayama and moved with him to Osaka. In 1972, Tanaka and Kanayama draw in Nara prefecture after Asuka.

Tanaka used in their work everyday items such as textiles and the like, and associated electrical elements, such as light bulbs with painting. It is regarded as an artist, the early feminist positions has processed in their art.

Her work has been and will be shown at international exhibitions and biennials. Her work is part of important international collections, including the Museum of Kanazawa, the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art (兵 库 県 立 美术馆, Hyōgo - kenritsu Bijutsukan ) in Kobe and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. In 2007, Tanaka's installation Electric Dress of 1956 ( A dress that projects the traditional kimono and consists of painted bulbs. Tanaka wore it at art events themselves. ) And drawings (studies ) for this work and some other paintings at the documenta 12 is shown in Kassel. The sculpture Electric Dress is considered the main and key work of Atsuko Tanaka. Their work Tokyo Work (1955 ), a large pink cloth was reconstructed for the documenta 12.
