Atul Dodiya

Atul Dodiya (Hindi: अतुल डोडिया, Atul Dodiya, born January 20, 1959 in Ghatkopar in Bombay ) is an Indian artist. He uses the medium of painting and drawing to represent themes of tradition and modernity in India. He was particularly devoted to representations of his hometown, the mega-city Mumbai. Working from Dodiya were exhibited at Documenta and the Venice Biennale.

Life

Atul Dodiya studied art at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Bombay (now Mumbai), and graduated in 1982 with a diploma. 1991-92 he spent a period of study at the École des Beaux -Arts in Paris. His first exhibition outside India took place in 1993 in Amsterdam. Dodiyas style is realistic, his art ranging from oil paintings to watercolor to drawing. Recurring elements are references to religious representations and conflict-ridden history of India and Pakistan, while the images are often structured by Written. Dodiya lives and works in Mumbai. His wife Anju Dodiya ( b. 1964 ) is also an artist whose work has been exhibited internationally.

  • 2007: Documenta 12, Kassel, Germany. On display were twelve large-format watercolors with animal and plant motifs as well as overrides of poems.
  • 2006-2007: Hungry God - Indian Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO ), Toronto. The exhibition was previously shown in Busan ( South Korea) and in Beijing.
  • 2006-2007: Edge of Desire - Recent Art in India, shown at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai, at the Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley ( CA) and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey ( MARCO ), Monterrey.
  • 2005: 51st Venice Biennale, Indian pavilion.
