Atyidae

Yamatonuma Shrimp ( Caridina multidentata )

The Atyidae occur with about 140 species mainly in tropical fresh waters, therefore they are often called in German freshwater shrimp. This name, however, does not apply to all species of this family, because some Atyidae also live in brackish or salt water (eg the Hawaiian shrimp ).

Atyidae eat detritus, which they catch with hairy subjects at their claws from the open water or pick up from the ground and water plants.

In Germany the kind Atyaephyra comes desmaresti before wild. It has become in the 19th century from the Mediterranean countries coming first in the basin of the Rhine at home and has then spread up to East Germany and Austria. The three -inch-long, live in stagnant, weedy waters animal is hard to see because of its clarity or transparency.
