Audierne

Audierne ( Gwaien Breton ) is a commune in Cornwall, in western France in the department of Finistère (No. 29) in the region of Brittany. Covering an area of 2.95 km ² live 2153 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). Audierne lies on a peninsula at the mouth of the Goyen and is a fishing village with a long sandy beach. From the port of the district Esquibien you can go by boat to the Ile de Sein.

The formerly an important fishing port is now essentially a pretty marina. Left of the fishing is an oyster hatchery, where you can purchase the delicacy. Along the harbor, the main business area of the town extends with a fairly complete trade offer, with cafes, bars and restaurants, crêperies, boutiques, real estate agents and vacation rental agencies, the town hall, tourist office, the breakpoint of the regional bus lines, and more. Saturday morning is here a well-stocked weekly market meeting place for locals and tourists.

History

In Audierne was from the beginning of 1939 in a former Sardinendabrik an internment camp, where originally soldiers of the Republican Spanish army and the International Brigades were established. They were followed by the start of the Second World War as a " suspect " suspected non-French, in the vast majority declared opponent of the Nazis. These included, inter alia, in a second wave of internment in 1940 Leonhard Frank, Soma Morgenstern, Jacob Altmaier and Balder Olden. They succeeded under dramatic conditions, the escape from the advancing Wehrmacht and the Gestapo following her.
